The PBO Green Book Revisited

The PBO recently conducted a workshop to review and update the Curriculum for Orthopaedic Residency Training in the Philippines. Held at the Golden Pine Hotel in Baguio City on March 14-15, the workshop revisited the PBO Accreditation and Training Manual, fondly called the Green Book.

The two-day activity was headed by the Curriculum Update Committee Chairman, Dr. Leslie Reyes and PBO Chairman, Dr Ric Liwag. Other board members in attendance were Drs. Andy Borromeo, Antonio Tanchuling, Mario Geronilla, Venancio Garduce, James Paggao, Danny Caro, Peter Quiaoit and Emmanuel de la Paz. The workshop was ably facilitated by Nemuel Fajutagana, MD, MHPed, Associate Professor at the National Teacher Training Center for Health Professions of UP Manila. Also gracing the occasion and providing enlightenment was Dr. Teresita Altre, three-time past chairperson of the PBO.

The Green Book outlines the competencies and learning standards by which graduates of Orthopaedic Residency Training Programs in the Philippines would be assessed as having completed their training and at which they might be deemed ready for the award of the certificate of completion of training by their respective institutions. The Curriculum is produced to guide Orthopaedic Training by providing accessible information for both the trainees and trainers, who are seen as its primary end users. It is also intended to provide guidance for other stake holders such as the general public, patients and the international orthopaedic community.

A work in progress, the Green Book revision is expected to be completed before the end of the year and is targeted for implementation by all PBO-accredited training programs on 2010. Included in the revision project is the updating of all PBO policies and procedures pertinent to training. The final revision will be available in this website ahead of print.
